I tried to RMA a 17-50mm f/2.8 just a year back, within warranty period; it was a no-go due to a technicality (it was a gift), and out-of-pocket repair costs were half the price of the lens. ... So far I've sent in a Canon to repair a broken IS part (17-55 f/ 2.8), and an Olympus (17mm f/1.8) that failed to focus out of the box, plus my Sigma zoom ring broke when I dropped it (hard to fault the lens in that case). ..... I may just go for a used Canon 16-35 ii for around the same price.
